CLBA (Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment) assessor training and CLBLA (Canadian Language Benchmarks Literacy Assessment) assessor training, developed by the Centre for Education & Training and endorsed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, have been delivered to federally and provincially contracted English as a Second Language assessors across Canada.

CLBA training provides

  • 5 trainer-facilitated days of intensive instruction, skill application and coaching
  • instruction in test administration protocol
  • instruction in language elicitation interview techniques
  • instruction in analysis and scoring of CLBA Listening/Speaking, Reading and Writing test instruments
  • application of learned skills through practice interviews with ESL students and through study and scoring of authentic test samples
  • CLBA certification
  • a CLBA kit to certified candidates
  • additional CLBA material as developed (e.g. test revisions/updates)
  • invitation to future CLBA professional development workshops/seminars

CLBLA training provides

  • 1.5 day of trainer-facilitated intensive instruction, skill application and coaching
  • instruction in test administration protocol
  • review of interview skill, with a focus on literacy clients
  • analysis and scoring of case studies
  • application of learned skills through practice interviews with literacy clients
  • CLBLA certification
  • a CLBLA kit to certified candidates
  • additional CLBLA material as developed (e.g. test revisions/updates)

Applicant Eligibility

All training candidates must meet  the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks Criteria for Candidates for Assessor Training. Candidates for CLBLA training must have prior CLBA certification.  Candidates will be responsible for ensuring that terms and conditions of CLBA and CLBLA use, as described in the Assessor Agreement, are adhered to.

Candidate Profile

Based on Access to Training Guidelines, the candidate for assessor training:

  • has achieved TESL certification from an accredited TESL training institution or post secondary education in a related field
  • is experienced in ESL instruction
  • is experienced in language and/or vocational or employment assessment/counseling
