To make ends meet Definition: to pay the bills EXAMPLE: Sandy and Robert just make ends meet each month EXAMPLE: To make ends meet, Tom must work at two jobs. To burn the candle at both ends Definition: to work too hard or be involved in too many activities EXAMPLE: John is ill because he has been burning the candle at both ends. EXAMPLE: I have got to stop burning the candle at both ends or I will be sick like John.
