Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) Diploma Requirements
Students must earn a total of 30 credits to obtain a secondary school diploma. One (1) credit requires approximately 110 hours of class time.
30 credits include 18 compulsory credits and 12 optional credits. Equivalent credits will be granted where applicable for International Learners. A copy of their original high school transcript along with a copy translated in English is required.
Plus one credit from each of these three groups:
1.The Arts
Business Studies
Health and Physical Education
2.Canadian World Studies
English
Social Science
Third Language
3.Senior Science
Technological Education
As part of the diploma requirements students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of unpaid community involvement activities. These activities can be completed at any time when earning secondary school credits.
Students are required to successfully complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test which is based on Grade 9 reading and writing expectations. This test can be taken in Grade 10 or after.
*Students planning on attending university must select at least six (6) Grade 12 university or university/college preparation courses in order to meet university entrance requirements.
Many students choose to take an extra year or two to finish high school. This gives them more time to learn English. It also helps be better prepared for their plans after high school. The teachers and the guidance counselor can help you consider this option.
