Tests have been developed by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration to evaluate an interpreter’s language and interpreting skills.
Two tests have been developed by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration to evaluate an interpreter’s language and interpreting skills: CILISAT and ILSAT. CILISAT stands for Cultural Interpreter Language and Interpreting Skills Assessment Tool. ILSAT was developed more recently to test other languages and excluded from its proper name the word “Cultural”.
Purpose of the Tests
These assessment tools are dual-language, print and recorded audio tests designed to test language fluency in English and other language, as well as ability to perform dialogue interpretation and sight translation.
The tools are intended to assess a candidate's readiness to enter an interpreter training program, or in evaluating an interpreter’s working language and interpreting skills.
The tests therefore uses basic health, social service and legal terminology as well as language encountered in working with abused women and victims of domestic violence.
