Peel Summer Academy
Program 2: Exploration Lead-ON
Grades 7 & 8
Exploration Lead-ON is a leadership program for grade 7 & 8 students who enjoy the outdoors and looking for a challenge. This program offers a unique experience where students will spend their time at various locations in Northern Ontario and utilize their leadership skills they learn throughout, culminating in a multi-day adventure experience.
At the onset of the program, students will make their way to the Finlayson Field Centre in Alton, where they will spend five days camping in the outdoors and participating in the very popular High Ropes Challenge program. The unique curriculum includes a leadership-training program while they learn how to cook their meals on open fire and stove top. The leadership component will provide a valuable context for their time together and for developing their personal skills and aptitudes. On day 6 of the trip, the group will travel to Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve where they will engage in a wolf-howl, walk in the clouds, and unique workshops before they move onto the real adventure! On day 9, the group starts their canoe and portage adventure where they travel each day to a new location, take in the sites and scenery, and even learn wilderness survival skills. The group travels back to Mississauga in the afternoon on the last day of the trip and are expected to be picked up at the HJA Brown Education Centre (Peel District School board head office at Hurontario and Matheson Dr.).

Courses
The learning in this program is integrated into planned experiences. A major component of the program includes the High Ropes Challenge Program. This is an experiential, non-competitive program of ten high element challenge activities set in the forest overlooking the Finlayson Field Centre property. Our PSA students, supervised by trained and certified staff, will participate in a series of challenging activities where trust, communication, problem solving ideas and leadership skills will be developed. A challenge-by-choice philosophy enables all participants to choose a level of challenge appropriate for them. The students will have a chance to set goals for themselves and the group, and each activity performed on the course will be based on those goals. The Finlayson High Ropes Challenge will be an exciting and unforgettable experience! In addition, students will explore issues related to the environment, native peoples, northern geography and leadership growth. The Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve offers a unique experience to study the wolves on-site in the wolf centre as well as a canopy tour in the clouds. The real test of the students learning 'adventure' culminates in the canoe trip where the group will utilize what they have learned related to outdoor life, survival, team work, and communication.
