Program 1: UTM Experience

Grades 4 to 8

U of T LogoOur largest of the PSA programs held at the University of Toronto at Mississauga offers students an opportunity to live in residence on the university campus while taking part in daily classes ranging in subject area from art to sports, cooking to physics, and everything in between. Distinct and unique late afternoon and evening activities are scheduled for each age group. These activities are created and developed based on student suggestions and for this reason, can differ for each session, and from year to year. We run two activity sessions daily. The first runs from 4 - 6pm and consists of smaller group activities. In the past, we have offered arts & crafts, leisure time, and sports games. After dinner, from 7 - 9pm, we have larger group activities, often age specific, but may include camp wide games. These have included theme nights, scavenger hunts, water nights, and talent shows.

NEW for 2012, we will be offering a DAY program in addition to the residential program. As well, we will be offering 1-week and 2-week programs. Students can choose to attend any combination of the following programs:

  • Session 1: July 8 – 20, 2012 (Residential ONLY)
  • Session 2: July 22 – 27, 2012 (Day program to start on July 23, 2012)
  • Session 3: July 29 – August 3, 2012 (Day program to start on July 30, 2012)
*Optional to stay for interim weekend at additional cost (see below)

Residential Program

Students in both the 1-week and 2-week long programs live in the university residence in groups of 3 - 7 along with a counsellor who is carefully selected and trained for this program. Students will be provided with 3 nutritious meals a day in the university cafeteria. The university residence is accessed by card keys only and so the building is locked at all times for the safety of PSA staff and students. Each unit has four bedrooms with an individual desk and bed, two bathrooms to share among the 4 occupants, a mini kitchen and a common area with a table and chairs. Students are expected to arrive on Sunday afternoon (between 4 and 5pm) and are picked up on Friday at 4pm. Students do return home on the interim weekend (2-week program), however, there is the option to stay for the interim weekend (at an additional cost). We host a Showcase at the end of each camp session on Friday from 4 to 6pm. The showcase allows parents and family members to see what their child has accomplished in their courses while at camp. The later half of the showcase caters to those courses that lend themselves to a more formal presentation and we conclude the evening with a slideshow.

Optional interim weekend stay

The weekend stay is a little less rigid then during the week as "courses" are not running and the daily schedule is more flexible with a later "rise & shine" and "lights out". The campers take part in small group activities and also travel off- campus for a day trip (eg. mini-putt, movies, zoo, etc.). Of course, all meals, activities, and staffing are included in the additional cost of $250.00 (+HST).

Day Program

Students enrolled in the day program are expected to arrive each day (Monday through Friday) to camp at 8:30am and will be picked up at 4pm. Students and their families are responsible for transportation to UTM campus each day. The day students will join the residential group for the day and participate in 4 different courses daily of their own choosing for the week. Lunch will be provided and will eat in the cafeteria on campus. Extended care is available from 4 to 6pm at an additional cost of $50/week. Drop off and pick up locations TBD.

Courses

Each day, students attend four exploratory courses they choose from a list of challenging and fun topics related to: technology, personal development, sciences, games, hobbies, psychology, philosophy, arts, fitness, and sports. Course selection works on a first-submitted, first-served basis, and selection opens for the upcoming season on the day of our Annual Open House in March.

Some courses are subject to an additional fee to cover the cost of materials specific to the course and are indicated in the course description booklet. The Course Description Book is unveiled at our Annual Open House and can afterwards be downloaded from the link below.
