The Program

Digital Health Careers (DHC) assists internationally trained Healthcare and/or Information Technology (IT) professionals to find alternative careers in Health Informatics.

  • One-on-one employment planning and support
  • Networking, job shadowing, and informational interview opportunities
  • Sector-specific information and resources provided by Digital Health Canada*

* For selected group sessions

Eligibility Criteria

  • Post-secondary degree in the Healthcare or IT field
  • Permanent Resident or Conventional Refugee
  • Availability to attend the MANDATORY 4-week in-class training from 9:00 am-2:00 pm
  • Commitment to build an alternative career in Health Informatics

The Program

The Skills and Experience Transitioning Canada (SetCan) program is designed for internationally trained accounting and finance professionals to become equipped with the necessary skills and tools to enter the Canadian workforce.  This program is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada and presented by the Centre for Education and Training.     

SetCan includes a three-week mandatory in-class instruction; CPA Ontario Speed Networking event; one to one individual support; individual employment action plan development and three months of paid internship. Not all participants are eligible for the paid internship opportunity as this is based on a Points Matrix System. 

Eligibility Criteria for Setcan

To qualify individuals must have the following: 

  • Post-secondary degree in the finance or accounting field
  • Two or more years work experience in the accounting or finance sector
  • A recent immigrant (less than 5 years in Canada )
  • Eligible to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Conventional Refugee)
  • NO previous finance or accounting work experience in Canada 
  • Actively searching for full-time employment
  • Canadian Language Benchmark 7 or higher (verbal and written), based on completion of language assessment.

Mr. Jeff Brown – Chair of the Board

CFA, CPA, CMA, MBA, CFP

With more than 15 years of financial services experience, Jeff Brown is Meridian’s Vice President, Community Banking. In this role, Jeff oversees the overall Member experience, sustainable operations and community engagement in Meridian’s Urban Markets. Prior to this role, Jeff was Meridian’s Vice President of Delivery Initiatives and Business Integration and was responsible for the development and execution of Meridian’s Small Business, Agency and Broker strategies. Under his leadership, positive gains were made in Meridian’s Small Business portfolio, Member satisfaction and employee engagement.

Previous to his time at Meridian, Jeff held a variety of roles at CIBC including roles in the bank’s Business Banking, Wealth and Commercial Divisions. Jeff graduated with his MBA from Laurier, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst, Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Financial Planner designations.

Mr. Farhad Sethna – Board Vice-Chair and Human Resources & Compensation Committee Member

MBA, CPA, CA, CFA, CHRL, C.Dir

Farhad is the Vice-President, Corporate Services at Shepherd Village, a healthcare facility in Toronto. He is responsible for a multitude of functions including Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing and Administrative Services. Farhad has held senior roles in the healthcare industry over the last 15 years at a hospital and organizations serving seniors and disabled individuals.

A strong proponent of giving to the community, Farhad is on the board of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario and prior to that was the Chair of the Alzheimer Society of York Region. He has also completed a 4 year term as Treasurer of Art Starts, a community based arts organization and was actively involved with the 100th Toronto Scout Group.

Mr. Andrew Gall – Board Member and Chair of the Financial & Audit Committee

FCPA, FCMA, MBA, C. Dir, A.C.C, CM&AI

Andrew Gall is the Vice President of Operations with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario and is responsible for Finance, Information Technology, Facilities, and Administration. Previous responsibilities included human resources, governance and risk management.Andrew is a Chartered Director (C. Dir) and Audit Committee Certified (A.C.C.). He also has earned the Certified M&A Integration credential.

Andrew’s previous experience is in the pharmaceutical, construction and not-for-profit health care industries. He has more than 20 years of experience in general management, finance, business development, strategy, governance and risk management.

Mr. Ben Earle – Board Member and Chair of the Governance & Nominating Committee

 

With more than a decade of experience in not‐for‐profit and charity management, Ben Earle works with directors and senior management teams in the community services sector to enhance and improve governance and operations processes, manage change and transitions, cultivate and improve stakeholder relations, and develop growth opportunities. With 10 years of experience in the settlement services sector, he held senior roles in community development and operations management, culminating in the role of Executive Director of the primary immigrant serving organization in Durham Region. He has developed extensive governance experience through multiple board roles, including four years as a Public Interest Director with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council, where he had two terms as Chair of the Human Resources and Compensation Committee.

Currently Ben works as a freelance management consultant in the non-profit-sector, providing support to multiple organizations in the areas of transition management, organizational development, research and analytics, and business development.

Mr. Epsit Jajal – Board Member and Financial & Audit Committee Member

CPA, CMA

Mr. Jajal brings 20+ years of experience leading technology, finance, consulting teams and business operations across a range of industries including banking, insurance, mining, construction, telecom, high tech, retail, energy, and government. Mr. Jajal has worked with several global organisations including Deloitte, RBC, and Blue Circle, leading innovative and strategically important technology-based operational improvements.

He is a versatile and collaborative professional with globally recognized academic credentials in business (MBA from Ivey School of Business), finance (CPA, CMA) and outsourcing (Certificate from Rotman School of Business). Mr. Jajal also devotes time via local charitable organisations, to coaching and mentoring internationally trained executives and professionals who have recently moved to Canada.

Ms. Jillian Siskind – Board Member and Governance & Nominating Committee Member

 

Jillian is Senior Counsel at Tarion Warranty Corporation. Previously, Jillian worked as counsel for the Ministry of Labour, the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Department Justice in criminal and provincial offences prosecutions as well as in administrative hearings and civil matters. Jillian was also the Senior Advisor to the Attorney General of Ontario as well as Senior Advisor responsible for public safety, corrections, emergency management and policing matters for Ontario’s Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

In a volunteer capacity as the past President of Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR), Jillian provided leadership to this national organization and spoke extensively in the media raising awareness of human rights and justice issues. Jillian has a B.A. from Simon Fraser University, an LL.B/J.D from the University of Ottawa and an LL.M from the University of Toronto.

Ms. Pamela Wong – Board Member and Human Resources & Compensation Committee Member

CPA, CMA, MBA

Pamela Wong is Assistant Vice President, Corporate Strategy at Manulife, where she supports the CEO and the Executive Committee in developing Manulife's global strategy. Prior to her current role, Pamela was based in Hong Kong for four years, first managing the Company's M&A activity and strategic initiatives across Asia, and then heading up strategic development and communications for Manulife Hong Kong's individual insurance operations. Prior to joining Manulife, Pamela worked in the consumer packaged goods industry at Kraft Foods and Maple Leaf Foods.

Pamela holds a BA in Honors Economics and Political Science from Western University and a MBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University. She is also a CPA, CMA.

Mr. Robert Murison – Board Member and Financial & Audit Committee Member

B. Comm, MBA, CPA, CA, CMA

Robert Murison is an honors’ graduate of the School of Business at Queen’s University and holds a Master of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. Robert is multi designated earning both his Chartered Accountant (CA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designations. After spending 5 years in public accounting with Price Waterhouse Chartered Accountants Robert has three decades of experience in a number of industries in positions that have included Cost Manager, Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis, Operations Controller, Divisional Controller, Corporate Controller, and Chief Financial Officer. Since 2000, Robert has also been very active in the Education sector teaching financial and management accounting for the Society of Management Accountants and at several universities.

Mr. Adnan Masood – Governance & Nominating Committee Member

MBA, MFAc

Adnan Masood has over 20 years of financial business experience in both the public and private sectors. Adnan is currently working as a Project Coordinator with the Building and Development Branch of Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. In this role, Adnan is responsible for overall management and oversight of financial, HR and operational matters. Through his career in the Ontario Public Service he has held various positions of increasing responsibility regarding financial oversight, accountability, business management and risk mitigation.

Mr. Masood has a master’s degree in Financial Accountability (MFAc) from York University. In addition, he also holds an MBA in Finance and Accounting from the School of Business and Commerce, Preston University and bachelors of commerce (B.Com) from the University of Punjab.

Ms. Anum Kazi – Governance & Nominating Committee Member

 

Anum Kazi is an international student and a recent graduate with a Masters of Financial Accountability (MFAc) from York University. She worked in financial services for a year internationally which sparked her curiosity to learn about financial accountability and the stewardship that shapes the corporate world. Corporate governance has been the focal point of her studies for the last two years during which she was also getting accustomed to the cold weather and Canadian humbleness, the latter she values greatly.

Anum Kazi also holds a BS Joint Honors degree in Accounting and Finance from the Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Pakistan, year 2012.

Mr. Desmond Alvares – Governance & Nominating Committee Member

MBA, MBCS CITP, CPA, CMA

Desmond has experience in Business, Project Management, Finance and IT Management in senior leadership roles in Canadian and International Wealth Management and Retail banks, provided insight and understanding of compliance rules for all levels in the Industry. Desmond held various senior positions at KPMG, TD Wealth, CIBC, IFDS, Capital One and UBS Private Banking in the Investment, Finance and Risk Management divisions as business analyst, Director and Project Manager.

In addition to being a Chartered Professional Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, he is a Chartered IT Professional (CITP) with the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

Mr. Jay Adhvaryu – Financial & Audit Committee Member

CPA, CMA

Jay Adhvaryu is a dynamic high energy, results oriented senior finance professional with extensive experience in Finance and Accounting management roles. Jay is currently the Director of Finance – Financial Planning and Analysis with AIMIA Inc., in Toronto, where he provides finance planning support to the Corporate Executive team. Prior to his current role, Jay held senior management roles with Rogers Communications Inc., SSP Canada Food Services Inc., Oakville Toyota, among others. Jay is recognized as a leader and an exceptional people manager who is a skilled communicator that inspires and motivates teams to move business ahead and achieve desired results by working with leadership teams and collaborating effectively across the organization.

Jay holds a Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting Major from Ryerson Polytechnic University and is also a CPA, CMA.

Ms. Martina Wood – Human Resources & Compensation Committee Member

CPA, CMA

Martina Wood is a CPA, CMA, living in Mississauga, Ontario. She has been an independent financial and systems consultant for over 20 years, providing management expertise and a practical approach to financial management, systems, and controllership issues with a focus on policies, processes, procedures and controls. Her strong and reliable counsel has helped numerous GTA organizations in a broad range of sectors.

She has written on business and personal finance issues, and has scientific, medical, and health policy interests. Ms. Wood is most recently the author of “Smart Decisions about Breast Cancer – choices, risks, living well, preventing recurrence”, a powerful new health literacy book and toolkit for women.

OUR HISTORY

2010 - PRESENT

2014

In 2014, TCET served over 78,000 individuals and 1,000 businesses and

community organizations.

Our Employment Ontario Services provided one-on-one assistance to 8,385 job

seekers, and administered a highly successful youth employment initiative

called the Youth Employment Fund. 451 youth were placed into meaningful

employment opportunities with over 423 participating employers throughout

the GTA.

Over 3,015 youth gained skills for career development through specialized

programs.

The Toronto Employment & Social Services programs saw an increase in client

referrals from caseworkers due to the success of clients.

Our mobile Career Coach served over 450 newcomers and youth in

underserved locations.

A 99% success rate was achieved by 794 driver education students.

Over 10 organizations and 120 individuals were provided with interpretation or

translation services.

Our Newcomer Information Centres served 9,100 new clients with 43,413

subsequent client visits at our 5 locations in Peel Halton in 2014. We also

enhanced accessibility to newcomer settlement services by increasing itinerant

services at a wide range of community locations.

Through our Care for Newcomer Children services at the Malton and Oakville

Newcomer Information Centres, 2,287 newcomer children were cared for,

meeting their social, emotional and intellectual needs while their parents

accessed on-site services.

TCET continued to support the pilot Coordinated Language Assessment and

Referral System (CLARS) across Ontario and made adaptations to the HARTS

database thus meeting the needs of both Citizenship and Immigration Canada

(CIC), and the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International

Trade (MCIIT). The French version of HARTs was fully completed.

The HARTs team also worked closely with the iCARE team at CIC to create the

ability for users to generate and upload their information into this national

database – reducing duplication.

With expanded client eligibility through CLARS, a greater range of immigrants

were assessed and referred to a broader range of classes. In Peel/Halton,

assessment of French language skill became available for the first time. In

York/Simcoe, language assessment services continued to see growth and we

established an itinerant site in Bradford (Simcoe).

TCET developed and piloted online delivery for some of our supports to

Ontario-wide language assessors. This included refresher webinars on the

assessment tools and remote mentoring of assessors via the web.

The online English and French self-assessment tools were highlighted as an

important resource in a new YouTube video produced by Citizenship and

Immigration entitled “Language Training for Canada” and “Formation

linguistique pour le Canada”. Growth in the number of prospective immigrants

from around the globe accessing our tools continued as 23,644 people from

around the world utilized the online assessments in 2014 (a 6% increase over

2013).

In June we began providing webinars and consultations on the new National

Language Placement and Progression Guidelines (NLPPG) for language

teachers across Ontario. We also provided presentations at the Peel Halton

Etobicoke TESL Affiliate i3 Conference and the TESL Ontario Conference.

LINC Home Study Canada continued to expand, serving almost 14% more

clients in 2014 than in the previous calendar year. Students from British

Columbia and Manitoba were able to join this distance English language

program with new funding from those regional Citizenship and Immigration

offices.

2013

TCET was involved in developing and supporting the new CLARS language

assessment and referral model, jointly funded by Citizenship and Immigration

Canada and the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration – adapting our

database tracking and reporting, assessor training, and direct assessment

delivery.

TCET opened a York Region (Richmond Hill) site to provide enhanced CLARS

language assessments services to this community. We also renovated space at

the Ajax Welcome Centre and Durham Region Unemployed Help Centre

locations for assessment service.

Over 200 youth (age 8 – 17) enjoyed our residential Camp PEAK located on

waterfront property (Deer Lake) in Northern Ontario.

Over 2,400 youth gained skills for career development.

Newcomers to our communities made over 123,000 visits to our information

and referral centres

A record number of documents (39,002) were certified by Commissioners of

Oath for 5428 clients at our Newcomer Information Centres.

Over 21,500 newcomer language assessments were completed in

Peel/Halton/York/Simcoe/Durham. This was a year-over-year increase of 56%.

In excess of 2000 database users were trained and 26,500 requests were

addressed by the HARTs helpdesk.

195 international clients gained Canadian education/experience.

TCET services were provided to over 105,000 individuals and 1,400 business or

The TCET governing board was changed, bringing in new board members and

our new chair, Peter O’Rourke.

Our new partnership with Community Door was finalized in Brampton and

Mississauga! This brought together various organizations to establish human

service hubs, allowing clients with varied needs to find help under one roof.

TCET’s Employment Service Centres provided comprehensive assistance to

1,169 participants, helping them with their employment goals. 263 participants

were assisted in accessing academic/literacy, language, occupational and/or

post-secondary education and training, leading to local labour force skills

enhancement.

1,262 information sessions and group activities were held at the 5 Newcomer

Information Centres and were attended by 10,721 clients from 136 countries

and 75 language groups

Occasional childcare services accommodated 3,961 children of immigrant

parents accessing services at our Malton and Oakville locations

Over 10,200 Peel, Halton and York Region immigrants received language

assessment and referral to local English language training programs to help

them achieve their goals. Partnerships with the 5 York Region Welcome Centres

ensured effective operations and client service.

More than 90 TESL-certified and experienced instructors provided LINC Home

Study classes from their own homes to students across Ontario and Canada.

Over 90% of students rated their satisfaction with LINC Home Study (Ontario

and Canada) as very good to excellent and 99% would recommend the

program to others.

As part of the Employment Ontario transformation, Employment Service

Centres were transitioned to the new model to include more comprehensive

services across Peel and Toronto.

Language Assessment Centres & LINC Support Services conducted 10,123

language assessments for newcomers who visited our locations in Mississauga,

Malton, Brampton and Oakville and itinerant sites across Peel and Halton.

LINC Home Study Canada celebrated its second year of service to newcomers

in 6 provinces outside of Ontario.

Youth Connections moved into their new space at Brandon Gate, Malton.

History of Assessments, Referrals and Training systems (HARTs) continued to

provided logistics, data collection and analysis for Citizenship and Immigration

Canada and Service Provider Organizations across Ontario. The HARTs team

was awarded the contract to implement the new HARTs to CLARS version.

The Newcomer Information Centre (NIC) conducted off-site services out of 4

major community locations; Meadowvale Library, Central Library in

Mississauga, Bolton Library in Caledon, and Milton Library in Halton; as well as

a number of faith places – Gudwaras, Mosques and Churches.

The National ELTPA Support Services team delivered Enhanced Language

Training Placement Assessment (ELTPA) assessor training and professional

development for 45 English Language assessors outside Ontario.

The Beginner Driver Education Program registered 1,283 students with 99%

successfully graduating with their G2 license.

Peel Summer Academy had 194 gifted youth in grades 4 through 10 participate

in a variety of programs offered from the University of Toronto – Mississauga;

Memorial University of Newfoundland; University of Victoria; Pearson College;

Finlayson Outdoor Centre; and various locations in Northern Ontario.

Over 67,000 individuals and close to 1,700 employers were served. This marked

an increase of 15% in clients served over 12 months.

A new service centre for Newcomers was opened in Oakville to include

Newcomer information, Language assessment, and Youth services.

1,400 job seekers attended the Aim High II Career Expo event in Mississauga;

services were provided and coordinated by the Career Coach Program.

The LINCing Youth (YLINC) web portal was piloted by 35 students. This portal

provided newcomer youth with settlement information while enhancing

language skills online.

20 teachers from Tianjin, China attended the Teacher Training program.

The Essential Skills for the Changing Workplace project team completed a twoyear

series of 48 employer seminars to over 900 participants across Canada on

the use of Essential Skills tools to enhance employers’ human resource

planning. Individual employer consultations were also provided to over 40

companies.

Our Language Assessment Centres provided 9,514 assessments for newcomers

during 2009 - a 25% increase over 2008. Itinerant and support services were

expanded and operating hours were extended.

Youth adventure programs were offered from several additional community

based facilities across the GTA.

2008

With service delivery sites across Peel, Toronto and Halton Regions, TCET

hosted over 20 employment fairs in partnership with local employers attracting

over 1,000 job seekers. The year 2008 also marked the delivery of the Centre

for Education & Training’s 25th Jobs Market which attracted 57 employers and

over 4000 job seekers.

The Youth Exchange program was launched; a series of activities and youthplanned

events that assist newcomer youth to fully integrate into their new

community.

The Essential Skills in a Changing Workforce project delivered its 16th seminar

across the province. This project was designed to encourage the awareness and

use of Essential Skills tools by employers across Ontario.

Our CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) Assessment Training using the

CLBA-I tool was provided to educators in Doha, Qatar.

Employability Skills for Youth program started with 14-multi-barriered youth

seeking assistance with career and employment skills.

The International Department launched a new certification course

titled”Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.”

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Home Study project

registered its 60th student, expanding the online and correspondence language

instruction to Alberta and Nova Scotia.

In total over 58,000 individuals and 1,100 employers were served.

2006/2007

The Centre for Education & Training wins contract for new Service Canada

funded Job Finding Clubs (Brampton and Mississauga) and a Toronto Social

Services funded Bridges to Employment program.

Service Canada also renewed the Strategic Job Search Program, operating out

of Brampton. This program, formerly known as Electronic Job Search, aims to

provide unemployed job seekers with the tools to get back into the workforce.

The new Centre for Education & Training website was launched.

Special events included a tribute dinner and a golf tournament to help send

children to summer programs.

A new mobile RV service was implemented to provide youth outreach.

The Mississauga Jobs Market attracted 4,400 people and 80 on-site employers.

A new one-stop access centre was opened on Queen Street East in Brampton.

Services include the new Brampton East Employment Resource Centre and the

relocated English Language Assessment Services and Newcomer Information

Centre.

A one-stop access centre was opened on Brandon Gate in Malton to include the

Malton Employment Resource Centre, Assessment Centre and new Youth

Opportunities services.

Two new Job Finding Clubs opened – one for immigrants/newcomers in

Mississauga and another for Internationally Trained Professionals at Brampton

City South Campus.

The new Bridges to Employment program for newcomers began operation in

west Toronto with funding from Toronto Social Services.

Special events for language services included the 12th Annual Ontario Region

LINC Assessors’ Conference, the Peel LINC picnic, and the 13th Annual LINC

Graduation.

The Enhanced Language Training Placement Assessment (ELTPA) tool was

developed and 40 LINC assessors across Ontario and Alberta were trained in

administration of ELTPA.

The first Canadian Language Benchmarks online self assessment tool was

developed for English and French language assessments.

The new brand for HBI College was officially launched on October 26th. HBI

obtained qualification to become a facilitator for the Canadian Payroll

Association courses and launched the Payroll Certificate Program. The Supply

Chain & Inventory Management program was granted diploma status - raising

the number of diploma granting programs to six.

the Centre for Education & Training.

CLTA launches the online version of the Distance Education, enabling clients to

learn English using the Internet.

QCIC delivers a presentation in partnership with Olympian Silken Laumann to

Petro Canada's Leadership Team at the corporation's annual conference.

CTI, in partnership with the City of Mississauga, signs a 3 year contract to

QCIC designs and begins the delivery of the organization-wide customer service

that we have coordinated since the first "Alternative jobsMarket" took place in

CLTA establishes a joint venture agreement with KTIT, one of Korea Telecom's

Group of Companies to launch CLTA Korea and offer comprehensive language

training and assessment services in major centres throughout Korea.

The Global Education Program educated over 500 students in 9 different

countries, spanning 4 continents in over 19 different senior secondary school

QCIC provides a highly specialized outplacement service to assist managers

from the Ministry of Community and Social Services to explore options for

The jobsMarket for Peel/Halton/Dufferin took place at the International Centre

in Mississauga with 94 employees recruiting for 2,500 jobs. The event was

attended by 5,000 job seekers.

CPI's mobile resource centre began to provide career planning and

employment assistance to youth and new immigrants in Peel/Halton/Dufferin

from its first stop at Square One in Mississauga.

CLTA, in partnership with CTI, negotiates an agreement with Korean officials to

deliver an Information Technology and English Language Training Program for

university graduates in Korea.

IM begins the development of online credit courses for secondary school

students for the Peel District School Board.

CTI launches an initiative to train Peel District School Board staff in the latest

software and technology. It is anticipated that over 2000 Board employees will

complete training.

CPI's eight Employment Resource Centres assisted over 220,000 job seekers

find work in the past year.

CTI begins the Strict Discipline Program which serves students expelled from

Innovations for Youth conducted a youth survey and research project regarding

youth employability for the federal government.

LCBO contracted QCIC to develop a customized training program to over 100 of

their finance group employees.

CLTA created and implemented a national multilingual assessment tool for

QCIC was awarded federally-funded contracts to deliver their nationallyrecognized

Ministry of Education and Training endorsed the Canadian Language

Benchmark Assessment developed by Centre for Language Training and

Assessment.

CLTA was contracted to train LINC Assessors across Canada.

Innovations Media worked on several new projects; traffic safety educational

software, farm safety computer-based training, and problem solving software

on health and safety issues for school administrators.

Ontario Realty Corporation hired QCIC to assist with corporate restructuring.

The Alternative JobsMarket, coordinated by CTI, attracted over 13,400 people to

a career and job fair at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. This was the

beginning of over 25 jobsMARKETs across Southern Ontario in the next 6 years.

QCIC establishes the Employment Service Centre funded by HRDC. EI recipients

gain access to full-time, long-term employment opportunities with local

employers (averaging over 800 job matches per year).

The Employment Resources branch of CTI coordinates the set-up for 3 new

Employment Resource Centre sites for community partners in Toronto and

expands operations at several other ERC sites. At its peak, the Centre for

Education & Training operated 8 ERCs, helped establish over 20 ERCs run by

other community organizations, developed an ERC set-up and operations

manual, and created and implemented the Client Tracking System for all 32

ERCs across Toronto.

CLTA staff provided train-the-trainer sessions at the University of Tabasco in

Mexico.

CTI developed a variety of new computer programming courses in response to

marketplace demands.

Innovations for Youth began a 52-week youth internship upholstery program.

WORKink, an online virtual employment centre was created by Innovations

Media in partnership with the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work.

QCIC assisted Allied Signal to assess needs and establish a business plan to

enhance productivity, performance and profit.

The Centre for Education & Training moved to a new location at the

Mississauga Executive Centre.

Community Education name changed to QCICCET (the Centre for Education and

Training) and the new entity became incorporated as a not for profit subsidiary

of the Peel District School Board.

QCIC developed the Jump Start program, designed to give job seekers a "jump

start" on their job search by equipping them with the skills to find employment.

1995

Community Education was chosen to pilot a new coaches workbook produced

by the Coaching Association of Canada.

Peel Computer Education Centre was awarded the contract for training the

employees of Pitney Bowes of Canada. We were only one of two trainers to be

awarded this contract.

As the broker for jobsOntario in Peel we registered over 20,000 individuals and

found positions for 3500 clients. jobsOntario was a multi-million dollar contract

that was operated for 4 years.

QCIC provided Job Search Workshops for laid off workers from Northern

Telecom, Dylex, Public Works & Government Services Canada.

75% of students trained through the Modern Office Technology contract were

hired by program end. The Region of Peel hired these graduates on a regular

basis.

Summer 95 Enrichment Learning Overseas - a new agreement with Blyth and

Company Travel enabled us to expand our summer program of high school

credits in England and France.

Community Education expanded its community partnerships by developing

and/or operating skills training programs with Ontario Native Alliance, triOS

Training Centre, Sri Guru Singh Sabha, United Food and Commercial Workers

Union.

CLTA delivers the Teachers Orientation Program (TOP) working with the Peel

Board of Education to assist internationally-trained occasional teachers achieve

permanent employment.

The General Educational Development (GED) program began in Etobicoke.

1994

Computer Technology Institute was officially launched. The grand opening was

on June 30.

The first computer camps for kids began and were very successful with 7

classes running in Brampton and 9 at Traders.

Community Education and Sheridan College partnership - Career Experience -

Labour Market Language Training. Sheridan provided the training component

and we provided the work placement component.

The Career Path Centres conducted an Open House on June 23.

Representatives came from Hydro Mississauga, Bridgestone-Firestone and the

Regional Municipality of Peel.

Job Finding Club and Career Explorer programs were renewed.

A new innovation is the addition of night school credit programming for adults

at the Adult Education Centre South.

Special Projects developed a number of projects: Custom Health and Safety

module for Manac was developed as part of the Vital Signs WHMIS training

software package; a hardcopy Health and Safety manual was converted into a

computer-based (CBT) software package; and Transit Barriers was created - a

multimedia software program to help people with literacy and/or learning

disabilities to use the bus system.

CLTA establishes its Translation and Interpreter Services

Booster Program begins which provided job search information for individuals

on UI.

1993

The Training Information Centre was officially opened in Mississauga to provide

up-to-date labour market and training information.

Community Education's main Brampton campus moved to the Brampton Civic

Centre for increased program space and greater accessibility. The Adult

Education Centre provided service on a daily basis to some 2,000 students

enrolled in credit, English as a Second Language and skills training programs.

Among the highlights was the granting of grade 12 diplomas to 60% of all

students enrolled in the credit program.

Community Education expanded its federally-funded career planning and skills

training programs to include 10 distinct programs. Programs operated in three

major campuses, one information centre, and two mobile trailers that traveled

throughout Peel.

The first fee-paying, skills training programs were offered by Community

Education in the areas of Computerized Office Systems and Inventory Control

and Distribution.

The Adult Education Centre (South), through a federal grant, became accessible

to physically challenged clients.

The Adult Education Centre (North) - Parkholme Campus opened to provide

full-time, day credit classes for adults in Brampton/Caledon. Enrolment was set

at 100 students. English as a Second Language classes were held at this

location.

The English Testing Centres developed and operated the LINC Reservation

System - the first fully automated language training reservation system in

Canada.

Assessment Services was contracted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to

deliver A-LINC Assessor training for Ontario Region.

Assessment Services managed first annual Ontario Region LINC Assessor

Conference.

A new Career Path Centre was established at the Brampton Civic Centre.

The Toronto West Training Information Centre was established.

QCIC developed and piloted the HRDC funded Booster Program. HRDC asked

QCIC to travel to the main HRDC headquarters across Canada to talk about the

benefits of the program. The program operated for 8 years, assisting UI clients

in finding solutions to employment barriers.

1992

Community Education added another dimension as the Region of Peel's

jobsOntario Training broker. A 30 million dollar contract for 4 years.

Two more English Testing Centres were established - one at the new Brampton

Civic Centre and the other in Malton.

CLTA started the day, evening and weekend literacy and non-credit academic

upgrading program (formally referred to as Literacy and Basic Skills).

The Training Resource Inventory was completed and distributed to over 50

government and community service users. It was updated regularly throughout

92-93.

QCIC wins major contract with McDonnell Douglas Canada to offer job search

workshops and career assessments for over 3000 downsized office and plant

workers.

S.T.A.R.T. Exploring contract awarded to Community Education.

1991

The Mississauga Training Needs Study was completed, soon followed by the

Brampton/Caledon Training Needs Study. These reports provided information

and recommendations regarding future training needs and directions.

Career Exploration in the 90's was launched in Mississauga and Brampton.

Continuing Education changed its name to Community Education.

Community Education developed an English Testing Centre to provide a

language assessment service for immigrants.

The Adult Education Centre - Britannia Campus opened in Mississauga. This

became the first full-time, adult-only day school in the Region.

Career Explorer Mobile takes to the road.

1990

First federally-funded Continuing Education trades program enrolled adults for

Upholstery and Home Renovations and Small Engines Training at Britannia

Secondary School. Workplace Training Programs were also conducted for the

first time at Britannia.

Continuing Education moved to the Traders Campus with 5000 Sq ft of space -

2 computer training labs, offices.

The Career Path Centre was opened with support from some corporate

donations. Fee paying assessments, counselling, and workshops were provided.

Job Finding Club commences at the Adult Education Centre in Mississauga.

Continuing Education, in partnership with the Multicultural Interagency Group

and Peel Multicultural Council, trained 40 immigrant women in English and

business skills through a federally-funded training program.

Continuing Education moved from the H.J.A. Brown Education Centre to the

new Matheson campus. This campus included two computer labs where feefor-

service training programs were offered.

Computer training programs in Accounting and Office Skills were launched in

Mississauga.

Farhad is the Vice-President, Corporate Services at Shepherd Village, a healthcare facility in Toronto. He is responsible for a multitude of functions including Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing and Administrative Services. Farhad has held senior roles in the healthcare industry over the last 15 years at a hospital and organizations serving seniors and disabled individuals.

A strong proponent of giving to the community, Farhad is on the board of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario and prior to that was the Chair of the Alzheimer Society of York Region. He has also completed a 4 year term as Treasurer of Art Starts, a community based arts organization and was actively involved with the 100th Toronto Scout Group.

Mr. Andrew Gall – Vice-Chair of the Board, Corporate Secretary, Chair of the Governance & Nominating Committee

Andrew Gall was previously the Chief Executive Officer of Ontario Pharmacists Association (OPA).  OPA is Canada's largest advocacy organization, and professional development and drug information provider for pharmacists and represents pharmacy professionals across Ontario. In this role he was focused on helping the Association achieve the goals set out in its strategic plan.

Prior to joining OPA, Andrew served as Vice President, Finance and Administration at Health Shared Services Ontario (formerly the Ontario Association of Community Care Access Centres) where he was responsible for finance, human resources, procurement, facilities, administration, privacy, risk management and security.

Andrew's previous experience also includes nine years with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario as well as roles with the pharmaceutical, construction and not-for-profit healthcare industries. He has more than 20 years of experience in mergers, general management, finance, business development, strategy, governance and risk management.

In addition to holding an Executive MBA from University of Toronto and an Honours BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University, Andrew is a Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant (FCPA, FCMA), Chartered Director (C. Mr. Epsit Jajal – Treasurer of the Board and Chair of the Finance & Audit Committee

Mr. Jajal brings 20+ years of experience senior leadership experience from a range of industries including banking, consulting services, insurance, mining, construction, telecom, high tech, retail, software, energy, and the public sector.  Mr. Jajal specializes in implementing organizational transformation initiatives that help dramatically improve organizational profitability and enterprise value through the use of innovative and strategically important technology-based solutions.  His areas of expertise include leading global teams responsible for technology, finance, professional services, and business operations. Combined with his globally recognized academic credentials in business (MBA from Western University’s Ivey School of Business), finance (CPA, CMA) and outsourcing certification (University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Business),  Mr. Jajal provides insightful perspectives to TCET that help the management team improve its operational effectiveness.

Beyond his involvement with TCET, Mr. Jajal also devotes time to working with charitable organisations, mentoring recently immigrated internationally trained professionals, and as an advisor and board member for other owner operated businesses and other Not-For-Profit organisations.

Ms. Pamela Wong – Board Member and Chair of Human Resources & Compensation Committee

Pamela Wong is Vice President, Global Marketing Strategy and Innovation at Manulife.  She is responsible for strategy development and the leadership of key strategic initiatives that enable Manulife’s transformation into a customer obsessed organization.  Prior to this role, Pamela held a variety of progressively senior roles in corporate strategy, corporate development, customer experience and new product development in Canada and Hong Kong.  Before joining Manulife, Pamela worked in finance at Kraft and Maple Leaf Foods.

Pamela holds a BA in Honors Economics and Political Science from Western University and an MBA from the Ivey Business School.  She is also a CPA, CMA.

Mr. Jeff Brown – Past Chair, Board Member and Human Resources & Compensation Committee Member

With almost 20 years of financial services experience, Jeff Brown is currently the Head of Retail Business Banking at HSBC Canada.  In this role, Jeff oversees the development and execution of HSBC’s Small Business proposition. Prior to this role, Jeff was Vice President of Retail Banking at Meridian Credit Union, where he led an aggressive and successful branch expansion strategy in the GTA. Under his leadership, positive gains were made in Meridian’s Membership growth, Member satisfaction and employee engagement.

Previous to his time at Meridian, Jeff held a variety of roles at CIBC including roles in the bank’s Business Banking, Wealth and Commercial Divisions. Jeff graduated with his MBA from Laurier, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst, Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Financial Planner designations.

Robert Murison is an honors’ graduate of the School of Business at Queen’s University and holds a Master of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. After spending 5 years in public accounting with Price Waterhouse Chartered Accountants Robert has three decades of experience in a number of industries in positions that have included Cost Manager, Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis, Operations Controller, Divisional Controller, Corporate Controller, and Chief Financial Officer. Since 2000, Robert has also been very active in the Education sector teaching financial and management accounting for the Society of Management Accountants and at several universities.

Mr. Adnan Masood – Board Member and Governance & Nominating Committee Member

Adnan Masood has over 20 years of experience in risk management, assurance, financial accountability and managing projects for both public and private sectors. Adnan is currently working as a Quality Assurance Coordinator with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Through his career in the Ontario Public Service he has held various positions of increasing responsibility regarding financial oversight, risk management, accountability and business management.

Mr. Masood has a master’s degree in Financial Accountability (MFAc) from York University. In addition, he also holds an MBA in Finance and Accounting from the School of Business and Commerce, Preston University and bachelors of commerce (B.Com) from the University of Punjab.

Anum Kazi joined TCET in January 2016 as a Governance and Nominating Committee (GNC) member of the board. She is currently working as an Accounting Analyst at IC Savings & Credit Union with 2+ years of international experience. She holds a Masters in Financial Accountability (MFAc) from York University, specializing in corporate governance, strategy, and risk. She brings in diversity and a balance on practical and academic fronts to the board intelligence. She thrives on intellectual stimulation, and strongly believes that knowledge is the key in raising ourselves from our lower self.

Mark Poole is an international executive who has held senior leadership roles in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Australia.  In addition to his functional assignments in Sales, Marketing, Operations and Strategic Planning, Mr. Poole has had a variety of business unit leadership roles including Managing Director for Whirlpool’s Corporation’s Oceania Region and most recently as Vice President and General Manager for Innovative Surface Solutions, a chemical company, in Albany, New York.

Mr. Poole has long been involved in the community and has taken on several volunteer roles over the years.  He was a board member of the United Way of Peel, a district officer with Toastmasters International, a member of the Supervisory Council for Unicol Credit Union, and most recently, a member of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Advisory Group in Bethlehem, New York. Martina Wood is an author and mostly retired finance professional. She provides management expertise and a practical approach to financial management, systems, and controllership issues with a focus on policies, processes, procedures and controls. Her strong and reliable counsel has helped numerous GTA organizations in a broad range of sectors.

She has written on business and personal finance issues, and has scientific, medical, and health policy interests. Ms. Wood is the author of “Smart Decisions about Breast Cancer – choices, risks, living well, preventing recurrence”, a powerful health literacy book and toolkit for women.

Martina also volunteers as a lay representative for the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG), and is a member of the Drug Pricing Policy Working Group, a patient advocacy coalition. Her past volunteer work includes seven years on the Mississauga Election Campaign Finances Committee, as well as leadership roles with various community groups.

She has held executive positions at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, Toronto Community Housing Corporation, City of Toronto, Borealis Infrastructure, and Ombudsman Ontario. Lenna also had the privilege of being Canada’s first female police chief in Guelph, ON in 1994. Throughout her career, Lenna has had a passion for organizational transformation leading her to become a skilled change agent focusing on strategy, innovation, people, processes and systems. Today, Lenna is an independent consultant providing a range of consulting services to clients.

Lenna holds a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology/Criminology) from the University of Toronto.

Ms. Melissa Qi - Finance & Audit Committee Member

Melissa Qi has held a range of positions in the public sector specializing in policy, operations and governance. She currently advises the Deputy Mayor of Markham, including the oversight of a dozen Committees and Boards. Melissa previously worked for the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport in partisan and non-partisan capacities. A believer of giving back, Melissa advocated for the interest of over 6000 students on the York University Community Safety Council. She also occupied a seat on the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council, governing its academic standards and integrity.

Melissa holds a Master of Financial Accountability and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Administration. She is currently working towards her L.L.M. in Business Law at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Bridges to Employment

VISION

To help and empower immigrants/newcomers, who are receiving social assistance, work towards their employment goals and literally change their lives for the better.

WHO WE ARE

Bridges to Employment is a non-profit organization that is affiliated with Centre for Education & Training. The program was birthed in 2005 to help immigrants/newcomers with the process of reaching their employment goal. Once the program was launched, many success stories followed after that. Clients in the past have found their dream jobs, temporary jobs and even went through additional training before seeking employment. The facilitator/coach will teach life lessons that will bring change to clients and help them gain practical knowledge of the workplace culture.

PROGRAM PREREQUISITES

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5
  • Newcomer/Canadian Citizen/Refugee Claimant/Permanent Resident

SUITABILITY

It is mandatory that the client attend ALL classes within the 11 – week program.

Note: If the client is sick, a proof of doctor’s note is required. In any other case, the client must have documents to prove why he/she could not attend the class.

It is mandatory that the client is available to attend class hours between 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Note: 1:00pm - 4:00pm – one-on-one appointments based on clients’ needs.

Clients are responsible to complete class projects and assignments on time.

Note: If the client misses a class he/she will have to catch up with the materials.

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

The 11 – week, half day Work Exploration and Planning program will address key areas but there will be integration of topics throughout the program with more time spent on some areas than others in accordance with specific group needs. All areas will be addressed and discussed during the in-class sessions. The program is broken into three key components that is highlighted below. In addition, individualized assistance will be provided through the coaching sessions and mutually agreed upon tasks to help bring clients closer to their employment goals.

COMPONENT 1

Team Building, Self Assessments and Addressing Barriers

Through the combination of assessment tools, participants will have a better understanding of themselves and areas that they need to work on to create a better future. They will also be better able to understand other group members and communicate with them more effectively. This awareness will help them to identify their interests, values, competencies, and personalities for further work on their action plans and goal setting. This component will assist participant to develop improved self management skills.

COMPONENT 2

Employability, Essential Skills, and Introduction to Action Planning

As clients work through these topics, they will discover and use resources to address employment barriers, communicate more effectively with each other and program staff, and develop life skills to help them manage their time, lives, finances, and health. They will understand the importance of action planning and be able to identify and work on components of a personal action plan. They will determine their individual levels of language and numeracy skills and be assisted to identify how to improve these skills and how they apply to the labour market and job requirements. Participants will develop a basic knowledge of computer applications and learn to use word processing for basic documents such as letters and resumes. They will be able to use the internet for research and job search purposes and send and receive email.

COMPONENT 3

Labour Market Research and Job Search Skills

In order for the participants to know how to connect their strengths and weaknesses to the world of work, it is important for them to conduct extensive occupational research. This will assist the participants in learning about opportunities that match the nature of their interests. Participants will identify suitable employment opportunities, consider alternative work options, and determine their employment goals. The final action plan will consolidate participants learning and skills acquired from the program. It will identify steps taken to date, results, and future activities required in order to achieve their employment objectives.

FINAL ACTION PLAN

As part of the measurable success of the project and for individual accountability, each participant will complete a final action plan before program completion. Through individual consultations as well as the group workshops, each participant will review and modify their plan including alternative actions should initial plans fail.

FOLLOW – UP

Support is offered for 4 months after the program is completed. Every client will have a vision and a plan put in place before they graduate from our program. Our goal is to help client’s achieve their goal and maintaining their path towards the goal. The follow-ups are booked as an appointment through phone calls or email to get more individual support and guidance.

REFERRAL INSTRUCTIONS

Ontario Works caseworkers directly refer clients to the program in accordance with the clients’ participation agreements and assessments of needs/issues. There will be a screening process where clients would complete a basic application form, and an in-person interview. Once the caseworker has referred the client, it is the client’s responsibility to contact the agency to book an appointment for the screening process.

Drop-in clients welcomed after 1:00 pm and will be given information about the program and referred back to their caseworker for approval. Referred clients should call to book an appointment. Where possible, a group orientation will be scheduled, however this can be done on an individual basis as needed.  Clients should call in advance. Dates of group orientation sessions are to be determined
