Newcomer Services - Success Stories

RESIZE TEXT

"In the need of the hour Centre for Education & Training gave me the basic orientation which a newcomer to this country is essentially looking for in order to settle down and pursue his goals. Today I am more confident and able to support myself."

Zaidoon & Meena, a Syrian couple who recently moved from the U.S. to Canada came to the NIC Sussex Centre seeking guidance and support as they were at risk of losing Ontario Works supports. The information required was confusing to the couple and there were struggling with providing sufficient financial information required by Ontario Works. A NIC counsellor was able to guide the clients and provide them with information on how to gather the information required to continue receiving the financial support that was needed by them to cover their basic needs. Within one week their issue was resolved and they were able to continue receiving the financial support. The clients continue accessing NIC services for other settlement related supports and as a result, they are eligible for further settlement assistance.

It feels really great to share my story. I feel I got a great start to my life in Canada. It was June 21st 2016 when I came to the Centre for Education and Training, Brampton East location for the first time. I just wanted to collect my Welcome pack. I did not know then, that along with the welcome kit, I would also get valuable advice which would change the future course of my career. The NIC team at the Brampton East location guided me and referred to the bridging and co-op programs. I joined the Business and Careers program at St. Gabriel College and coincidently, got my placement at the Brampton East Centre. I was so elated!  My placement was one of my best work experiences. Everybody was so professional, knowledgeable and warm at the same time. I learnt a lot not only in terms of work but also skills which are paramount for efficient performance in any field.

I have utmost respect for everyone at TCET and still cherish my days that I spent there as a student. I enjoyed it so much that my 14-week placement came to an end very quickly. Luckily, I was hired as an Admin Assistant with one of the TCET centres.

Thank you TCET for showing me the right direction shaping my career.
